The Bass Coast Cycle Challenge delivers a quintessential Victorian cycling experience, combining breathtaking coastal vistas with challenging inland climbs across five thoughtfully designed routes. This community-driven event has established itself as the region's premier cycling festival, attracting riders from across Australia to test themselves on the renowned Mt Misery climb while supporting vital road safety education programs.
Since its inception, the event has enabled over 3000 students to take part in game-changing road safety workshops, and supported numerous local community groups who volunteer to assist with the event. Rider numbers are capped at 1000, with the most popular routes the 121km, 85km and the ~100km gravel - where adventure-seeking cyclists can explore the region's less-traveled paths.

The Bass Coast Cycle Challenge offers five distinct routes, each designed to showcase the region's diverse landscapes and cater to various cycling abilities:

121 km Route: This flagship course is tailored for seasoned cyclists, featuring 14 climbs, including the notable ascent of Mt Misery, which rises to 250 meters. Participants will traverse the rolling hills of the Strzelecki Ranges before descending into Wonthaggi and returning along the picturesque coastal road from Cape Paterson to Inverloch.

85 km Route: Ideal for strong intermediate to advanced riders, this loop commences with the challenging Mt Misery climb. The journey continues through scenic routes such as Andersons Inlet Road, Kongwak Road, and Alvie Road, culminating with a coastal ride back to Inverloch.

53 km Route: Designed for intermediate cyclists, this course includes a 130-meter climb, offering a balanced mix of mild ascents and flat terrains, perfect for those seeking a moderate challenge.

40 km Route: Suited for recreational riders and families with children aged 12 and above, this route provides a relatively flat and leisurely ride, allowing participants to enjoy the majestic scenery of the Bass Coast.

100 km Gravel Route: For adventure enthusiasts, this off-road course comprises approximately 60 km of gravel paths, guiding riders through the rugged and breathtaking landscapes of the Bass Coast.

  • Aid Stations: Multiple aid stations are positioned along the course, providing water, electrolytes, and snacks to keep riders fueled.
  • On-Course Marshals & Signage: The route is clearly marked, with marshals stationed at key points to assist riders and ensure safety.
  • Sweeper/SAG Wagon: A support vehicle follows the course to assist riders who experience mechanical issues or need to withdraw.
  • First Aid & Medical Support: Trained medical personnel are stationed at key locations, with on-course mobile response teams available if needed.
  • Mechanical Support: Bike mechanics are available at the start and at designated points along the route to assist with common issues like flat tires and minor repairs.
  • Finish Line Amenities: Riders can enjoy refreshments, a recovery zone, and a social atmosphere at the event village in Inverloch.
  • By Car:
  • Inverloch is a two-hour drive (150 km) southeast of Melbourne, accessible via the South Gippsland Highway (M420) and Bass Highway (B460). From Melbourne, take the Monash Freeway (M1), then follow the South Gippsland Highway (M420) to the Bass Highway (B460), leading directly to Inverloch.
  • Nearest Airports & Distances:
  • The closest major airport to Inverloch is Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine), approximately 150 km northwest, about a 2-hour drive. Another option is Avalon Airport, roughly 190 km away, translating to a 2.5-hour drive.
  • Public Transportation Options:
  • While Inverloch is primarily accessible by car, public transport options include V/Line bus services from Melbourne to nearby towns. However, direct public transport to Inverloch is limited, and services may not align with event schedules.
