The Bridge to Bridge (South Bank) is the flagship event in the Waimakariri cycling calendar. Traditionally held in December, this race utilises the rugged terrain of the river’s southern side. While the course remains predominantly downhill, the South Bank is known for its more varied surface, including heavy shingle, sand sections, and forestry tracks.

Since its inception, the event has grown to accommodate everyone from seven-year-old beginners to elite endurance athletes. The addition of the 115km Enduro has transformed the race from a purely downhill sprint into a genuine test of stamina, requiring riders to climb the North Bank before crossing the river to descend the South Bank.

The atmosphere at the Whites Crossing finish line is a highlight of the local summer, bringing together the Christchurch cycling community. Participation directly supports the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust, helping fund vital emergency services across the region.
