MOUNT ISA BORDER RIDE

The Mount Isa Border Ride is an annual cycling event that takes participants on a 200 km journey from Mount Isa to Camooweal, near the Queensland–Northern Territory border. Established in 2008, the ride has grown in popularity, attracting over 100 riders each year and raising significant funds for various local charities.

  • Date: 2025 event was cancelled due to a lack of participation. The organisers have announced in the event's Facebook group that they are looking to plan a new event in 2026.

The ride covers approximately 200 km along the Barkly Highway, featuring long, straight stretches with minimal elevation changes. Riders will experience the vast outback landscapes of North Queensland, with the route culminating at the Queensland–Northern Territory border near Camooweal.

Important Event Schedule

Registration Day: Saturday, June 7, 2025

  • 5:30 AM: Registration opens and mandatory bike safety checks begin
  • 6:40 AM: Registration and safety checks close
  • 6:45 AM: Mandatory ride briefing for all participants
  • 7:00 AM: Ride departure

Event Requirements:

  • ALL riders, team captains, and supporters must register and attend the mandatory ride briefing
  • ALL bikes require safety inspection during morning registration - no exceptions
  • Partial-distance riders joining later must complete registration and safety checks
  • Finish line closes: 5:00 PM

The Mount Isa Border Ride accommodates both individual riders and teams. Participants can choose to complete the entire 200 km distance or share the journey as part of a relay team. The event fosters camaraderie and is suitable for cyclists of varying endurance levels.

By Road:

  • From Brisbane: Approximately 1,800 km northwest via the Warrego and Landsborough Highways.
  • From Townsville: Approximately 900 km west via the Flinders Highway.

  • Wiliyan-ngurru National Park
  • Approximately 20 km southeast of Camooweal, this national park is known for its rare sinkhole caves formed over 500 million years ago. The park features two short walks that provide views of these geological formations. While camping is not permitted, the Nowranie Waterhole offers a pleasant spot for picnics.
  • Georgina River Bird Watching
  • The Georgina River near Camooweal is a haven for bird enthusiasts. When water levels are high, the area attracts a diverse array of bird species, including pelicans, ducks, brolgas, and swans. Lake Francis and Lake Canellan are notable spots for observing this rich birdlife.
  • Tree of Knowledge
  • Situated within walking distance west of Camooweal, this mature Coolibah tree holds historical significance as a traditional meeting spot for drovers and teamsters. It stands as a living testament to the region's pastoral heritage.
