RAIL TRAIL RUN AND RIDE

Location: TAS
Date: Sep 18 - 20, 2026

The Rail Trail Run and Ride is a multi-discipline gravel festival and mountain bike event held in Scottsdale, Tasmania. The event takes place on the compacted gravel and earth terrain of the North East Tasmania Rail Trail, tracing a scenic path through the Dorset region. Cyclists navigate a route framed by native tall forests, deep fern glades, and dramatic historical railway cuttings. Rather than navigating technical singletrack, riders can expect a smooth surface with gentle, predictable gradients that suit a wide variety of bike setups.

Established in 2018, this community-focused weekend is organised by the Rotary Club of Scottsdale in partnership with the Launceston Running Club. The festival plays a direct role in preserving the local trail network. Operating as a completely not-for-profit event, all entry fees and proceeds go directly back into the ongoing development and infrastructure maintenance of the rail trail corridor. The weekend brings together hundreds of endurance athletes, local riders, and active families to the north-east corner of the state.

The Sunday cycling program is highly inclusive, opening the trail to standard gravel configurations, mountain bikes, touring setups, hybrids, and e-bikes. While dedicated endurance riders can test their pacing over the full out-and-back mountain challenge, those looking for a social day out can choose from shorter distance options. The event atmosphere is anchored by a lively festival village based at the old railway precinct, transforming the Scottsdale township into a bustling regional sporting hub.
