The Setting: Launceston and the Tamar Valley
Each year, Sally’s Ride transforms Launceston into a hub of community cycling.
The course winds through the Tamar Valley along quiet backroads lined with farmland and vineyards.
Riders can choose their challenge: 10 km, 50 km, 70 km, or 100 km. E-bikes and hybrids are welcome, and course support is provided throughout.
The Original, Inspirational Sally Fletcher
Sally’s Ride began in 2002 with Sally Fletcher, who cycled 1,400 km solo around Tasmania to raise funds for youth mental health. Her effort inspired a legacy that now continues under the Rotary Club of Central Launceston.
“Sally’s courage on that first ride sparked something," said one ride volunteer last year, "the idea that cycling could be more than sport; it could be service.”
On ride day, Launceston fills with energy: serious cyclists chasing personal bests, families riding side by side, and volunteers cheering on every finisher. By afternoon, the finish area turns into a community picnic with coffee, music, and tired smiles everywhere.
